One problem was graded incorrectly. Mixed partials are always the same so the question about this was true. Bring your midterm to your TA if you got this right for an extra point.

In the review today, I used a constant C in Newton's law of cooling. It would have been clearer to have used C = 70, say. This C is not the same C you often use in the solution. If y' = k(y-70) then y = 70 + Ce^{kt}.

You may not use a calculator that stores formulas during your midterm. This would not fair to those using simpler calculators. If this is a problem, we just won't use them at all. I will ask on Monday.

The midterm will cover everything discussed in lectures from the beginning of the semester through Friday's lecture. This includes material from Chapter 10 except for numerical methods of solving differential equations. I will not ask you Heather's derivation of the implicit derivative on the midterm, but will give you an extra credit problem about this on the final.

If you see a True-False question that is sometimes true and sometimes false, the correct answer is FALSE. For a statement to be true it must be always true. If you believe something is false, you should think of a counterexample to be certain. If you believe it to be true, you should be able to explain why. I may not ask for justification on this midterm, for lack of time, but you should be able to do this and will certainly be asked on the final.

Hanfeng's review will be held Sunday 1-3pm at 60 Evans.

I spent most of the day trying to encrypt the homework solutions for you, but the files are just too big for you to download easily. I will bring in hard copies for you on Friday.

Your new homework assignment is posted. You might get started on this as it is a bit longer than other assignments have been.

Bonnie will be giving a midterm review Monday March 18 from 5-7 in 2050 VLSB.

One GSI misunderstood about the extra credit for the second problem on Quiz III. I believe this has now been corrected.

If you see any homework problems that require you to do substitution or integration by parts, you do not have to apply these methods. Just set up the integral.

I just received a message from Prentice-Hall. They promise to send me the homework solutions in a PDF file by Wed. If you can wait until then, that will save our GSI's some unnecessary work.

The second question on Scott's quiz was a bit confusing for many of you, although some solved it correctly. I have decided to count it as a bonus question. The quiz will consist only of the first question and will thus have half the value of other quizzes.

Notice about the current homework assignment.

I only wish for you to set up the integrals in the section about applications to the integral. You do not have to solve them. That is, you may skip part b of 7 and 9 and set up the integral for 12.
Here is the integral for the problem I gave in class today. I am not asking you to solve this, just be able to produce the integral.

http://downloads.weblogger.com/gems/16b/problem.pdf

The quiz should cover the material in Homework IV and V. Nothing in today's lecture will be on the quiz. You should turn in your homework to your GSI on Wed morning.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT QUIZZES
A group of you came up with an idea to solve our quiz problem. It is an excellent solution. Two GSI's have got back to me with full support and that is enough for me to proceed.

We will continue to have quizzes in our Wed class, but I will run the review session. Your GSI's will be present to help proctor and answer questions.

You need a quiz right away, since you only have one that is being counted. Therefore we will have one this coming Wednesday, March 6.

I have received the homework solution set from the editors of our book. It is a huge file and I am trying to decode it. We have to have it password protected so that the whole world cannot see it. I will tell you the password on Monday. Please keep this information within our class.

We have now covered everything we need in the chapter about trig functions and will next move to section 9.5 -- applications of the integral. We will discuss this on Friday. You will find an updated homework assignment that includes homework from Chapter 8 and 9.

I think the quiz went really well today. Everyone was in good form, especially you! Thanks for keeping quiet as you left.

We will not have a homework assignment this week as Monday was a holiday and you had a quiz today. I will give you some exercises for Friday's lecture on Friday so you can get started.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

The quiz solution set had a couple of typos:

In 2B the inequality sign needs to be reversed.

In 4A the solution to df/dy(10,5) is actually 100/3, and not 200/3.

The homework III solutions have now been posted by Bonnie.

It seems we have a holiday on Monday. (!) Please note that there will be a quiz on Wednesday. It will cover 7.1-7.5. We will make sure you have a full 30 minutes this time.

The quiz was too long so we will scale the grades. I was not given the opportunity to check it beforehand or would have caught the problem. This should not happen again.

The student learning center's study group for 16B will meet in 201B César Chávez Center on MWF 10-11. Aaron Green will run it and he appears to be an excellent tutor.

Your homework for Tuesday covers only 7.1 and 7.2. The quiz will also cover this material. You should be familiar with the lectures and homework for the quiz.

We have a cut-off rule for all homework and quizzes. There will be no homework or quiz questions from new material introduced after Friday's lecture.

Remember that the homework will not be graded for accuracy since it is possible to find solutions worked out for many of the problems on the web. Instead, please highlight anything you are confused about and would like help from the grader. You will get full credit if you seriously attempt each problem.

We now have solutions to the first homework assignment. You can also find on the homework link a nice drawing lesson that uses a different technique from ours. It gives very nice results.

Welcome to our new Math 16B homepage. The second homework assignment should be posted soon. It will be due next Tuesday. On Wed you will have your first quiz. It will cover the first two homework assignments.
