        <![CDATA[So, it turns out that my web hosting service offers MT Pro.&nbsp; I've been paying for a <a href="http://www.typepad.com/">Typepad</a> <a href="http://tamise.typepad.com/">blog</a> for a few years now, but I'm using it less and less (bad blogger!); and in this time of economic turmoil, it seems wise to consolidate and cut back on expenses.&nbsp; So, I figure that I'll give MT a go and see how I like it.&nbsp; A few quick observations:<br /><br />- Typepad is *waaaaaaay* more user friendly for fiddling with the templates and designing your own site.&nbsp; Not sure that I have the brainspace to deal with customizing MT right now.&nbsp; Can I live with the generic?&nbsp; (Probably - but would be nice if there were more template choices, maybe I can poke around a bit...)<br /><br />- MT imported all my entries and comments from Typepad, which was quite handy.&nbsp; V happy about that.<br /><br />- this server is kinda slow...<br /> ]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>So at the end of last week, I completed a draft of my dissertation.&nbsp; It didn't really hit me until after I'd finished writing the last section what a huge freakin' task that was.&nbsp; I mean, of course, I <em>knew</em> (it's a dissertation, after all), but in order to get through the daily tedium of writing, I couldn't allow myself to think more than one day at a time.&nbsp; Wow, though.&nbsp; I'm editing and putting together the refs now, and will turn it in to my committee at the beginning of next week.&nbsp; In the end, it'll weigh in somewhere around 280 pages.&nbsp; And after all that, parts of it aren't too bad.&nbsp; :)&nbsp; Let's hope the committee thinks so, too - final judgment (i.e. oral defense) is set for June 6.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>A <a href="http://chronicle.com/wiredcampus/index.php?id=2905&amp;utm_source=wc&amp;utm_medium=en">post</a> on the <a href="http://www.chronicle.com">Chronicle</a>'s <a href="http://chronicle.com/wiredcampus/">Wired Campus blog</a> caught my eye the other day: &quot;Blogs May Be Rendered Obsolete by New Technology.&quot;&nbsp; Quite a statement!&nbsp; Seems the author feels that RSS aggregators (not nearly new, actually) and &quot;micro-blogging&quot; applications like Twitter might be stealing some blog thunder.&nbsp; The author's point is that these technologies - all of which provide a vehicle for discussion of content, whether it's content from a blog that was pulled via RSS, or fresh content created by a Twitter author - might portend the death of blogging.&nbsp; Yeah... guess I don't really agree.&nbsp; While in the early days of blogging, blogs were easily confused with discussion boards (still are, by some newbies), blogging as a practice really revolves around the post, tied to the blogger's identity, authorial voice, etc. etc.&nbsp; We're lucky if our posts get one comment, and even luckier if they spark a discussion.&nbsp; :)&nbsp; I suppose that the technology itself is only half the story, anyway - blogging as a practice is fairly different than Twittering as a practice, and while there are places of overlap and opportunities for convergence, I think changes in blogging would have to be rooted in changes to the practice of blogging - which, at the moment, seems fairly stable.<br /> </p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>Whoo baby.&nbsp; I'm listening to the <a href="http://www.wnyc.org/shows/bl/episodes/2008/04/09">Brian Lehrer Show</a> right now, as per my usual morning routine, and it's a discussion between a couple of guys debating whether or not the Internet is evil.&nbsp; Ok, well, you get the picture though.&nbsp; Anyway, one of the guests is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Siegel">Lee Siegel</a>, author of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Against-Machine-Being-Human-Electronic/dp/0385522657/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1207753185&amp;sr=8-1">Against the Machine: Being Human in the Age of the Electronic Mob</a>.&nbsp; After reading what the blurb on Amazon had to say - &quot;Siegel explores how the Internet affects culture and social life,
particularly the psychological, emotional and social cost of high-tech
solitude. Arguing that the Internet's widespread anonymity eliminates
boundaries, Siegel discusses the half-fantasy, half-realism of online
personas.&quot; - I'll admit to kind of tuning out, because come on people, do a little research, huh?&nbsp; There's quite a bit of published research and good thinking from the past few years that have (successfully, in my opinion) challenged these views.<br /> </p>

<p>I tuned back in, though, when I heard the following from Mr. Siegel (I'm paraphrasing here): &quot;...we need to move away from the wisdom of crowds idea... everything bad is good for you - if the Nazis had won, those would be on their best seller lists&quot;&nbsp; Whoa!&nbsp; Apparently, Mr. Siegel coined the term <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&amp;safe=active&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=spell&amp;resnum=0&amp;ct=result&amp;cd=1&amp;q=blogofascism&amp;spell=1">blogofascism</a> a couple of years ago - there's something of a description of the origins of the debate <a href="http://www.mahablog.com/2006/06/24/smoke-filled-backrooms-of-the-internets-continued/">here</a> (albeit from a blogger on the other side of the debate).&nbsp; Unfortunately the links to the relevant columns written by Mr. Siegel in The New Republic redirect to TNR's current home page.</p>

<p>Aaaaanyway.&nbsp; I was just kind of shocked by the very strong sentiment behind the Nazi remark.&nbsp; I absolutely believe in questioning popular wisdom; there should be critical stances vis a vis the role of the Internet in shaping culture.&nbsp; I see that in my data, as well - there's a tension between college students' uptake of popular technologies, and a certain amount of pushing back against a dominant discourse that says you must keep up and be always connected.&nbsp; &nbsp;But, man - Nazis?</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>Been thinking a bit about different concepts of time/space arising out of the technological affordances of mobile/synchronous/nearly synchronous technologies (like mobile phones, IM, etc) and the ways in which those affordances are taken up by college students (constant contact, being always connected).&nbsp; In the past, the space of the classroom wasn't necessarily available to students to conduct social interaction with friends outside of the classroom.&nbsp; But it's no longer clear, when you're texting while the professor is lecturing, whether you're doing class, or doing social interaction, or both... or maybe the idea of doing class has now changed to include social interaction with friends outside of the class.&nbsp; Does that mean that the person on the other end of the text is now part of the class?&nbsp; It does need to be said that the boundaries between in and out of class have never been clear, as illustrated by Jan Nespor and others - but I think there's something different about this type of visceral connection as opposed to less tangible flows of ideas.</p>

<p>When doing my masters degree, I had a flirtation with Lefebvre's third space theory, but I don't think that's a totally appropriate lens here.&nbsp; Much closer is the idea of new &quot;technosocial spaces&quot; (<a href="http://www.itofisher.com/mito/publications/intimate_connec.html">Ito &amp; Okabe</a>), and I'm also intrigued by the notion of &quot;nested spaces&quot; which I came across this morning on <a href="http://myvedana.blogspot.com/">Guy's blog</a>.&nbsp; If anyone's been thinking about this for a while, would love to hear your top-three readings/resources!</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>The <a href="http://www.nytimes.com">NY Times</a> is running a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/31/technology/31chat.html">story</a> about a <a href="http://www.vivaty.com/">soon-to-be released app</a> that embeds real-time, 3D chat spaces into existing web pages, like your blog, or your Facebook profile.&nbsp; The premise of the article is that the pendulum has swung too far toward asynchronous communication on the web (think blog comments or the Facebook Wall), and that users yearn for a live chat experience.&nbsp; Personally, I'm not sure - almost the entire point of Facebook in my world, for example, is that it allows me to spend very little time and energy to maintain my weak ties.&nbsp; If I wanted a live chat, I'd pick up the phone (which I rarely do).&nbsp; Which begs the question, what demographic is the live chat aimed at?&nbsp; &nbsp;<a href="http://pewinternet.org/">Pew Internet</a> has some interesting, <a href="http://pewinternet.org/PPF/r/198/report_display.asp">fairly recent data</a> that might shed a little light:&nbsp; 91% of teenagers use social network sites to stay in touch with friends they see often, so perhaps it'll be useful for that.&nbsp; On the other hand, other <a href="http://pewinternet.org/PPF/r/230/report_display.asp">recent Pew data</a> suggest that the (gasp!) the landline and the cell phone are the top two choices for teens who communicate with friends daily.&nbsp; Curious to see where live chat embedded in web pages will fit in.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>Just came across an interesting <a href="http://remixinganthropology.wordpress.com/2008/03/18/digging-in-the-digital-database-of-the-mundane-the-digital-lives-of-san-francisco/">post</a> on <a href="http://remixinganthropology.wordpress.com/">Remixing Anthropology</a> - an abstract of a talk on using the vast amounts of digital data that are stored in our travels on the web, on cell phones, etc. for anthropological research.&nbsp; It made me think of a couple of things, including a project that I keep hearing about - David Buckingham and Rebekah Willett's <a href="http://www.childrenyouthandmediacentre.co.uk/projects.asp?Completed=no&amp;TableName=&amp;RowID=6&amp;ResearchProjectsID=39">research</a> on &quot;people's everyday uses of video camcorders in domestic settings,&quot; which basically gives out video cameras to people and asks them to make a record of what they do with the camera.&nbsp; You could also say that Mimi Ito's <a href="http://digitalyouth.ischool.berkeley.edu/">Digital Youth project</a> - a large scale ethnography of youth's out of school technology practices - deals with the mundane, as well.&nbsp; I think this type of work is important in that it begins to puncture some of the hype surrounding the discourse of new technologies - &quot;oooh, looky what the kids these days are doing!&quot; that tends to focus on the exceptional, running the risk of overstating the issue, and/or marginalizing alternative practices that don't fit within the discourse.&nbsp; Pushing back against the hype is something I try to do in my research, as well, and I wonder - is perhaps the pendulum beginning to swing the other way?&nbsp; Or will the hype discourse continue with each new technology that's released on the market?</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>I'm very excited to report that I'll be joining the faculty in the <a href="http://wwwnew.towson.edu/coe/rset/insttech/edd/">Department of Educational Technology and Literacy</a> (rather serendipitous overlap with my interests, no?) at <a href="http://www.towson.edu/">Towson University</a> in the fall!&nbsp; &nbsp;I'll be teaching classes at the undergraduate and grad levels, advising primarily doctoral students, and working with a group of colleagues who have already been supportive in terms of facilitating the transition from grad student to faculty member.&nbsp; (If you have advice on that whole transition thing, do share!)&nbsp; In the meantime, I &quot;just&quot; have to finish my dissertation (I swear, if one more person says that to me I'm gonna explode)... But it's going well, and I'm feeling energized.&nbsp; Here's to the light at the end of the tunnel!</p>]]>
